I've tried other booklights before, but they've not really measured up to the job. Mostly, they've been too small to illuminate the whole page and their button cell batteries have run down quite quickly (and they're not all that cheap to replace). The Vekkia booklight overcomes these problems. It lights up both pages with ease, as my photo shows and as it's rechargeable it costs close to nothing to run.The only issue I found with it is that the battery pod is quite big and chunky. This is great for battery life, but it means that attaching the light to a paperback book that you're only just beginning to read is slightly problematic, as it waves around and tends to bend the cover. I found that clipping the light as near to the book's spine as possible and as many pages in as you can (bypassing the front matter) just about works.Hardbacks are no problem, of course. You can find opposing opinions as to whether yellow light is best for late-night reading, but the colour of the Vekkia's light is quite relaxing and the scale of available brightness settings is useful.
I have used a fair few booklights, some are really bright and when you have a banging sore head that is the last thing you need. This is a softer amber light. 3 settings of light and you just press the button on top each time to change, 4th press turns it off.Clip is pretty sturdy - this is a paperback I am reading so I just clipped it onto a chunk of pages. I normally don't like doing that as a hate damaging pages, this one doesn't leave a mark, the inside of the clip has softer padding.I charged it as soon as it arrived (light goes red when charging, changes colour when fully charged. I have been up late reading each night and it hasn't needed charged yet.It comes with it's own charging wire but no plug, it is the smaller thin usb lead, neat wee box although I keep mine in my book protector sleeve with my book.£14.99 is a bit more expensive when you can get lights for half or even quarter the price if you shop around but this doesn't damage yuor book. If your eyes give you bother or headaches are an issue you might find this much better to use. Unless it breaks really quickly I don't have any issues/negatives and wouldn't think twice about getting another, absolutely recommend. xxx
I enjoy reading in bed before sleeping but my wife doesn’t always appreciate my bedside light throwing so much glare into the bedroom so this little clip-on book amber glow light looked like it would solve that problem. It is so neat and compact and well-made. It arrived already charged and the single on/off button also allows me to increase or decrease the three levels of brightness. The soft padded clamp holds securely on any book I tried it on whether hardback or paper back and it also can sit on my bedside unit well and looks stable despite being so small and lightweight. The soft amber glow illuminates two pages of a book well and the bendy flexible arm allows me to position the light exactly where I want to cast the light. I wasn’t sure that the amber glow would be bright enough but it is, even on the lowest of the three brightness levels and doesn’t feel harsh on my eyes. I love the fact that it can be charged with the USB cable supplied and that it is so lightweight. And it certainly is a neat little light that can be kept in my bedside unit.BUT – and I hate to be harsh about something that is so clever and so well made – but I do suspect it might turn out to be a bit of a novelty. When actually clipped onto a paperback book I was reading in bed last night, it did end up being a bit of a nuisance with me turning pages and flexing the book. And I ended up having to regularly readjust the clamp and angle of the light. So my initial experience wasn’t great. Perhaps I will get used to handling the book and light better. I did end up setting the light close by on the bedside unit beside me instead and it did allow me to read reasonably okay with the light at top brightness and directed at the book. It deserves a four star for being ingenious and superb quality - but I’m not sure of long term functionality.
